Acknowledgements
Many people have helped in many ways. I have attempted to list them, roughly in time order of their assistance, below. The risk of identifying and acknowledging individuals is that I will miss some who've contributed greatly. If I have done so please accept my most humble apologies and let me know ... you will be up on this list as soon as I can manage.
- John Seymour, Master Mariner and the great great great grandfather of our children, for taking notes, saving journals, and passing them on to the families that follow. John's son, William F E Seymour; his daughter Mary E Seymour; her daughter, J Mary Ferguson; and her husband, Alan C Watson: for cherishing the material that was passed to you so that we can glimpse our ancestors and our heritage. Mary Margaret Schuck, my wife, for her support and good humour as this project became an obsession.
- The many un-named and unknown people, and the many institutions they serve, who have saved and stored historical data and who are, now, gradually making that information generally available via the 'web'.
- The genealogy websites ancestry.com, ancestry.com.au, and their associated services, for letting me glimpse (at a price) the sort of historical data that is out there.
- Nivard Ovington, host of the Rootsweb 'Seymour' bulletin board for steering me towards some missing Seymours and putting a little more method into my seeking.
- Chris Woods, an English Master Mariner himself, who has advised concerning available research resources and directions for further research and, probably most importantly, has patiently fielded a wide range of idiot-questions concerning seafaring basics.
- Bill Burns, owner and host of the cable website, for his advice and support and, especially, his belief that although this is rather esoteric material there are people "out there" who are interested.
- Bill Glover for having looked at so much of this history, before I knew it existed, and thereby paving the way for me to fit John Seymour's small contribution into the resulting jigsaw.
I remain indebted to each and every one of you, and many others beside. Thank you.
