Introduction
This page concerns John Seymour's formal certification as a mariner. In 1865 he passed his Ordinary Examinations and was certificated as a Second Mate. In 1867 he was certificated as a First Mate, and in 1869 as a Master. Each application form also contained a list of the ships that he had served on durin the period prior to his application, or between applications.

Despite being certificated a Master in 1869 John Seymour served another ten years before first actually being the Master of a voyage. This was, apparently, the norm of the day for English mariners and was one feature that separated English mariners from their American contemporaries.
