| 1910 French Cable Company Fourth Annual Outing Program | ||||||||||
The French Telegraph Cable Company, with lines from France to New York via St Pierre, and on to South America, had a busy office in New York City in the early 1900s. Thanks to Bill Holly for sharing this program of the company's Employees Association Fourth Annual Outing, held on Sunday July 10th, 1910, at Witzel's Point View Island, College Point, Long Island, New York. Joseph Witzel's popular Point View Island amusement park, constructed in the early 1890s at Tallman Island (on Long Island Sound, just west of the present-day Whitestone Bridge) drew summer crowds looking for relief from the heat of New York City. A contemporary advertisement called it “The Finest Summer Resort on the Sound,” with “Mammoth Dining Pavilion, Large Dancing Platform, Bicycle Track, Ball Grounds, Boating, Bathing, Bowling Alleys, Shooting Galleries and Picnic Grounds.” The Greater Astoria Historical Society's website has this note: “October 25, 1913. Joseph Witzel, known throughout the entire city as the proprietor of Point View Island, College Point, died at the age of 79 in the cafe he opened at the corner of Second Avenue and Tenth Street in College Point in 1872. In 1891, after twenty years of success, he opened the Point View Island Resort on the East River between College Point and Whitestone. The place was ideally located as a summer grove for outings, and it soon became famous. Some of the largest organizations in the city held outings there. The grounds were large enough to accommodate as many as four organizations simultaneously holding outings.” The former site of the park on Tallman Island is now occupied by a sewage treatment plant.
